Weaning Day
The roaches as we lovingly call them (aka the peanuts aka Pistachio’s Dec ‘24 litter) have hit 8 weeks and it was time for weaning yesterday. Thankfully everyone has taken the change in stride!
Farms wean as early as 2 weeks and as late as never, if they have a mama who will do it on her own.
With Pistachio we fell a bit in the middle. The babies had been in her feed bowl since about 2 weeks and at this point she is tossing them to get them out of her food and only nursing a few times per day. Life has been super busy, so here we are. Eight weeks and mama has moved out!
Pistachio is currently in her own very large paddock with an a-frame that is bursting with straw and line of site to all the other pigs. She’s eating, drinking and enjoying the recent sun breaks so we’ll continue to monitor to make sure her milk dries up without incident.
The roaches are thrilled to not have to fight mama for food (eating 2lb feed/day/pig plus alfalfa) and have eachother for snuggles and entertainment. The piglet cam has been rather hilarious. When mama is away those piglets will play!
Half and whole shares still available for this crew. Butcher date is in October.
Look how big they are!!!
